This is a 1939 first edition cover of the original Robert May poem/story book distributed by the now defunct Montgomery Ward department store chain between 1939 and 1946. There are scant similarities between this and the highly condensed song, but less in the way of story identity between May's original text and the 1964 Rankin-Bass produced clay-animated television special. For example, Rudolph's parents were actually proud of the boy, not ashamed, and the reindeer lived in a village separate from the North Pole, so Santa did not know of Rudolph's existence until the critical night of need. Early printings of the book are a valuable collector's item in the 21st century.
