This is an original Edison Diamond Disc (50638) recording from 1920 (cut in November of 1919) featuring singer Billy Murray. The cut playing is Sahara, which is the reverse side of the title shown, You'd Be Surprised. Edison sometimes chose to etch information directly on the center surface of the record rather than use a paper label, and fading over time makes viewing or photographing the label directly from the front difficult, thus the angle. Diamond Discs were cut using vertically grooves (up and down) as opposed to lateral (side to side), so were compatible only on Diamond Disc players, or other selected phonographs equipped with a 90° rotating head to accomodate the Diamond Disc format. Longer songs at higher volumes could be accomodated this way. This recording was restored using a 2.5 mil wide stylus on a magnetic cartridge rewired to accomodate vertical motion.
