Presented here are basic profiles of some of the better-known or important publishers of the ragtime era at most levels of business size and distribution. An attempt has been made to balance some personal information about the people running the firms with some history of the firm as a whole. As a practical matter due to sheer volume in some cases, and to retain a consistent format, publications are not listed for these firms. When possible, a list of ragtime-era composers published by the firm are substituted instead, with links to biographies of those composers when available, which will list their published pieces albeit without the publisher's name. Lyricists are also included, as it was often their efforts that helped to sell a song and keep a firm viable. Many worked both as composer and lyricist in some cases, switching off depending on the situtation. For further information I may suggest certain reference sources, and for an overall view of good references currently available or tucked away in your local library, please check out my
Ragtime Books and
Ragtime Music Collections pages. I am not trying to duplicate the efforts of anybody else, just enhance some of what is already available in a concise and easy to access format. Comments are always welcome.
